Galgeberg - Greyton, South Africa

From high on the Galgeberg above Greyton, the camera looks out across the Overberg in South Africa's Western Cape, over rocky fynbos slopes and the valley below toward farmland that stretches far into the distance as clouds roll over the ridges.

Greyton began in 1854, when Herbert Vigne turned his farm, Weltevreden, into a village and named it after Sir George Grey, then Governor of the Cape. Today it's a small country town of about 2,800 people sitting beneath the Riviersonderend Mountains.

Behind the town, a nature reserve of about 5,400 acres (2,200 ha) protects rich fynbos, and its trails climb toward the mountain peaks. Just to the west lies Genadendal, founded in 1738 as the first mission station in southern Africa.

Did You Know? Genadendal means "Valley of Grace," and the South African president's official residence in Cape Town is named after it.
