African Penguin Colony - Betty's Bay, South Africa
This live camera overlooks the African Penguin colony at Stony Point Nature Reserve in Betty's Bay, one of the most important mainland breeding sites for the endangered African Penguin on the South African coast.
The colony has seen remarkable growth over the past decade, expanding from around 100 breeding pairs to more than 2,500, making it one of the fastest growing penguin colonies in the world. On any given day you can spot penguins waddling along the shoreline, parents feeding chicks, birds returning from fishing trips, and courtship behaviour during breeding season.
African Penguins are classified as Endangered, with the global population having declined by over 70% since the 1980s. Colonies like Stony Point are critical to the survival of the species.
Did You Know? African Penguins are the only penguin species that breeds on the African continent, and unlike their Antarctic cousins they live in a warm climate year round. They were once known as Jackass Penguins due to their loud donkey-like braying call, which they still use to communicate within the colony.
