Table Mountain View from Maastricht - Cape Town, SA
This camera is positioned on the Maastricht hillside north of Cape Town, looking south across the Cape Flats towards Table Mountain, Devil's Peak, and Lion's Head spread across the horizon. The full flat-topped profile of Table Mountain dominates the centre of the frame, with the city of Cape Town and its suburbs stretching out below in the middle distance.
Table Mountain stands 1,086 metres above sea level and is one of the oldest mountains on earth, estimated at around 600 million years old, predating the Himalayas, the Alps, and the Andes by hundreds of millions of years. The flat summit, which gives the mountain its name, is formed from a thick layer of sandstone laid down when the region was an ancient seabed.
The view from Maastricht is particularly striking at sunrise and sunset, when the low light catches the Cape Flats below and the mountain appears to float above the haze of the city. The camera captures the full panoramic sweep of the Cape Peninsula's mountain chain in a single frame.
Did You Know? Table Mountain is home to more plant species per square kilometre than almost anywhere else on earth. The Cape Floral Region, of which the mountain is part, contains around 9,600 plant species, more than the entire United Kingdom, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
