Fru Rauer Osprey Nest - Rauo Island, Norway
This camera sits directly at the nest of a breeding osprey known as Fru Rauer, located on Rauo Island near Gressvik in the Østfold region of Norway. The nest is built on a rocky outcrop right at the water's edge of the Oslofjord, and the female is currently incubating three eggs with the open water visible just metres behind her.
The stream is part of Fiskeørnprosjektet i Østfold, a Norwegian osprey conservation and monitoring project that has been documenting breeding pairs in the region for several years. Ospreys were once virtually extinct in Norway due to hunting and habitat loss, and the recovery of nesting pairs in Østfold is considered a genuine conservation success.
Ospreys are among the most widespread birds of prey on earth, breeding on every continent except Antarctica, but nesting cameras this close to an active clutch remain rare. The eggs typically hatch after around 37 days of incubation, after which both parents fish the surrounding waters to feed the growing chicks.
Did You Know? Ospreys have a reversible outer toe that allows them to grip fish with two toes pointing forward and two pointing back, giving a far more secure hold on slippery prey than most birds of prey can manage. They also have oily, dense feathers and closeable nostrils, adaptations that allow them to plunge feet-first into water at speed without getting waterlogged.
