Sundhnúkur Volcano & Aurora - Grindavík, Iceland

This camera looks across the Sundhnúkur crater row on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, near the town of Grindavík, where dark lava fields stretch out under the sky and the northern lights sometimes appear on clear winter nights.

The area woke up dramatically in late 2023. On November 10, magma pushing up beneath Grindavík forced the whole town to evacuate, and on December 18 the first eruption broke out along the crater row.

Nine eruptions followed through 2025, and in January 2024 lava reached the edge of Grindavík itself. As of late September 2026, the ground at nearby Svartsengi is still rising as magma builds up again, and scientists say another eruption could come with little warning.

Did You Know? In November 2024, lava from one of the eruptions swallowed the parking lot of the famous Blue Lagoon spa.
