Red Funnel Ferry Terminal - Southampton, UK

On this busy corner of Southampton's waterfront, Red Funnel boats load up for the crossing to Cowes on the Isle of Wight, while yachts and the odd giant cruise ship pass by.

The ferries shuttle back and forth across the Solent all day. Cars and trucks roll on and off at the ramp, and foot passengers watch from the top deck as the boats swing out into Southampton Water, past pilot boats, tugs and container ships heading for the docks further upriver.

Summer weekends are the busiest, with holiday traffic bound for the island and sailing boats everywhere, and winter brings moody gray skies and choppy crossings.

Did You Know? Southampton enjoys a rare “double high tide”, with the water rising twice in quick succession. The extra hours of high water helped turn it into one of Britain’s great ports.
