Olympiastadion - Berlin, Germany
This camera is mounted on the Corbusierhaus residential tower in west Berlin, looking east across the Olympic Park towards the Olympiastadion, its distinctive oval roof clearly visible above the surrounding tree line. The Bell Tower of the 1936 Games stands to the left of the frame, and the sprawl of Berlin extends across the horizon behind the stadium complex.
The Olympiastadion was built between 1934 and 1936 to designs by architect Werner March and originally held around 100,000 spectators. It was comprehensively modernised between 2000 and 2004, gaining a tensile roof that now covers all 74,244 seats while preserving the monumental stone exterior of the original structure. The blue athletics track inside was installed at the request of Hertha BSC, whose club colours it reflects, and the stadium serves as the club's Bundesliga home ground.
Beyond club football, the stadium has hosted the DFB-Pokal final every year since 1985 and was the central venue for the 2009 World Athletics Championships, where Usain Bolt set world records in both the 100 metres and 200 metres. It also hosted the final of UEFA Euro 2024.
Did You Know? The 1936 Berlin Olympics held at this stadium were the first Games to be broadcast on television, with screens set up at public viewing points across Berlin allowing residents to follow events live. Around 162,000 people watched the Games this way, making it the first large-scale public television broadcast in history.
