Outback Waterhole - Watarrka National Park, Australia
Deep in the red heart of Australia's Northern Territory, a small pool near Kings Canyon becomes the busiest spot for miles as thirsty wildlife makes its way in from the surrounding desert. The canyon's sandstone walls rise more than 330 feet (100 m) above the creek.
The park's name, Watarrka, comes from the Luritja word for the umbrella bush that grows across these rocky ranges, and in country this dry, every animal has to come to the water eventually.
Red kangaroos, euros, dingoes and even wild camels come in, along with flocks of zebra finches, budgerigars and spinifex pigeons, most of them around dawn and dusk when the desert is cooler.
Did You Know? Australia has the largest population of wild camels in the world. Their ancestors were brought over in the 1800s to help explore the outback.
