Australia is the only country that covers a whole continent, spreading across about 2.97 million square miles (7.69 million km²) between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its vast, dry interior, known as the Outback, is mostly desert and scrub, so most Australians live along the coast, especially in the green southeast.

Its most famous natural wonder is the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system on Earth, stretching about 1,430 miles (2,300 km) along the Queensland coast. In the red heart of the country, Uluru rises about 1,142 feet (348 m) above the plain and is sacred to its traditional owners, the Anangu. A kangaroo and an emu hold up the national coat of arms.

Most of Australia's mammals live nowhere else, from koalas and wombats to the egg-laying echidna. The Daintree in Queensland is thought to be the oldest tropical rainforest on Earth, while peregrine falcons and white-bellied sea eagles raise their chicks in the middle of big cities like Sydney and Melbourne.

Did You Know? The platypus is one of the only mammals that lay eggs, and males carry venomous spurs on their back legs.
