White-Bellied Sea Eagle Nest - Sydney, Australia

Camera bySea-EagleCAM4↗

High in a scribbly gum in Newington Nature Reserve, at Sydney Olympic Park, a pair of white-bellied sea eagles raise their chicks in a huge nest of sticks, close to the mangroves and wetlands along the Parramatta River.

Sea eagles have been seen around the park since at least 1991, and the first young were recorded here in 2003. The pair often perch in the mangroves to eat mullet and other fish from the nearby wetlands.

White-bellied sea eagles are fairly common along Australia’s coasts and inland rivers. They build massive stick nests, usually high in a tall tree, and often reuse the same nest for many years. In flight they soar with their wings lifted upward.

Did You Know? Although it’s one of Australia’s best-known birds of prey, little is known about the white-bellied sea eagle’s full breeding cycle, from nest building to first flight.
