Loch Arkaig Osprey Nest - Scottish Highlands, UK (Cam 1)
This live camera watches over an active Osprey nest in the Loch Arkaig Pine Forest, a ancient Caledonian pinewood in the Scottish Highlands managed by the Woodland Trust. The nest sits high in a Scots pine with a sweeping view of the Highland mountains behind, one of the most dramatic backdrops of any nest camera in the UK.
Ospreys were extinct in Scotland for most of the 20th century, having been persecuted to extinction by 1916. They returned naturally in 1954 and have been slowly recovering since, with Loch Arkaig becoming one of the most watched nest sites in the country. The birds migrate to West Africa each winter and return to the same nest each spring.
Did You Know? Ospreys can dive into water feet first at up to 130 kilometres per hour to catch fish, hitting the surface with enough force to submerge completely before resurfacing with their catch. They have a reversible outer toe and spiny foot pads specifically adapted for gripping wet, slippery fish.
