Ilulissat Airport South - Greenland

Floodlights wash over the snow and stacks of shipping containers at Ilulissat Airport, while stars and faint green aurora fill the dark sky above the rocky hills. On clear nights from late August into April, the northern lights can brighten into dancing curtains over the airfield.

With around 4,700 people, Ilulissat is Greenland’s third-largest town and its busiest tourist hub. Sled dogs are a common sight on the edge of town, and in winter they still pull sleds across the frozen land and sea ice, a tradition that goes back thousands of years.

Beside the Ilulissat Icefjord lie the ruins of Sermermiut, where people lived and hunted for some 4,000 years. A wooden boardwalk leads out to them from town. You can watch the airfield from another angle on our Ilulissat Airport North cam.

Did You Know? The famous polar explorer Knud Rasmussen was born in Ilulissat in 1879, and his childhood home is now a museum about his journeys across the Arctic.
