Rasnov Fortress - Transylvania, Romania
This live camera from Pensiunea Helen looks across to Rasnov Fortress perched on a steep hill 200 metres above the town of Rasnov in the Transylvania region of Romania, with the large Hollywood-style RASNOV lettering visible on the hillside below the walls.
The fortress was built by the Saxon community in the 14th century as part of a coordinated defence network protecting Transylvanian villages from Ottoman and Tatar invasions, and its elevated position made it one of the most strategically effective strongholds in the Burzenland region.
Unlike many Romanian castles that fell to sieges, Rasnov Fortress was never successfully taken by force, with its defenders able to hold out due to a well dug inside the fortress walls that provided a reliable water supply during prolonged sieges. The fortress dates back over 700 years and is today one of the best-preserved medieval citadels in Romania, accessible by foot or via a cable car installed in recent years running from the town below.
Rasnov sits in Brasov County, 15 kilometres from Bran Castle, the fortress most associated internationally with the Dracula legend, making this corner of Transylvania one of the most visited castle corridors in Eastern Europe. The Carpathian Mountains visible behind the fortress in clear conditions rise to over 2,500 metres and form the natural southern boundary of the Transylvanian plateau.
Did You Know? Rasnov Fortress was never captured by force during its entire medieval history, largely because defenders dug a well inside the walls that took 17 years to complete but guaranteed water supply during any siege.
