Tau Game Lodge Waterhole - Madikwe, South Africa
This live camera sits at the waterhole of Tau Game Lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve on South Africa's northern border with Botswana, in the Groot Marico region of North West Province. Madikwe covers 75,000 hectares and is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa, operating as a malaria-free Big Five destination that was established in 1991 through Project Genesis, one of the largest wildlife relocation programmes ever undertaken in Africa.
The reserve supports all of the Big Five plus cheetah, spotted and brown hyena, endangered African wild dog, giraffe, zebra, and over a dozen antelope species including sable, which are among the most elusive large antelope on the continent. African wild dog populations in Madikwe are particularly significant as the species has a total wild population of fewer than 6,000 individuals across the continent.
Tau Game Lodge itself sits on the northern boundary of the reserve and takes its name from the Tswana word for lion. The lodge's waterhole camera produces consistent sightings across all major species as animals are drawn to the permanent water source throughout the day and night.
Did You Know? Madikwe Game Reserve was created in 1991 through Project Genesis, which relocated over 8,000 animals of 27 species from across southern Africa in what remains one of the largest wildlife translocation operations ever carried out.
