Bald Eagle Nest - West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, USA
Welcome to a bald eagle nest above the Monongahela River at West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, USA, on the edge of a working US Steel plant near Pittsburgh.
The nest itself is the stack of sticks in the lower left of frame, built into the fork of a sycamore on a wooded slope, with the river and a bridge visible through the branches.
Bald eagles use the same nest year after year, adding to it each season until some reach two metres across. The pair are around all year, though the camera is busiest from February when eggs are laid, with chicks hatching in spring and flying by summer.
Pennsylvania is four hours behind UTC in summer and five in winter. The feed runs under a special permit from the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
Did You Know? These eagles are nesting beside a steel mill on a river that was once among the most polluted in America. Pennsylvania was down to three known bald eagle nests in the early 1980s, and there are now hundreds. The birds came back to the Monongahela because the fish did.
