Akita Airport Apron - Akita, Japan

Jets park and load at the terminal on the apron at Akita Airport (秋田空港), about 9 miles (14 km) southeast of Akita Station in northern Japan, and this camera watches the ground crews work in all weathers, including the heavy winter snow.


The airport opened on June 26, 1981, in the former town of Yuwa. It was the first civilian airport in the Tohoku region with a runway 8,202 feet (2,500 m) long, and it sits 305 feet (93 m) above sea level.


Flights link Akita with Tokyo Haneda, Osaka, Nagoya and two airports in Sapporo, and there's an international route to Taipei. In 2015 the airport handled about 1.24 million passengers.


Did You Know? Akita's first airport opened in 1961 on the coast, but strong crosswinds and nearby TV antennas on Mount Omoriyama limited its use.
