Coral City Camera - PortMiami, Miami, Florida, USA

Camera byCoral Morphologic↗

Just below the surface beside one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, there's a coral reef nobody planned. It grows on the boulders lining the shipping channel at PortMiami, which were put there to protect the shoreline, and the corals settled on them all by themselves.

Now brain corals and threatened staghorn coral grow just feet from passing cruise ships and cargo vessels, while parrotfish, porkfish, snapper and sergeant majors weave between the rocks.

Hundreds of other reef creatures have made this city seawall their home too. The water changes with the tide, the weather and the boat traffic, so some days it's crystal clear and on others it's green and murky.

Did You Know? Parrotfish crunch up coral with their beak-like teeth and poop out fine white sand. Much of the soft sand on tropical beaches was made by parrotfish.
