Piazza del Comune - Assisi, Italy
This live camera looks down over Piazza del Comune, the main square at the heart of Assisi, a medieval hilltop town in the Umbria region of central Italy and one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in the world. The square has been the civic and commercial centre of the town since Roman times, and the Temple of Minerva visible on its northern edge dates back to the 1st century BC.
Assisi is the birthplace of Saint Francis, founder of the Franciscan Order, born here in 1181. The Basilica of Saint Francis on the western edge of town draws over 5 million visitors annually and houses some of the most important medieval frescoes in existence, many attributed to Giotto. The entire historic centre of Assisi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The piazza itself is alive year round, busiest during religious festivals and the summer pilgrimage season, and noticeably quieter on winter mornings when the town returns to its local pace.
Did You Know? The Temple of Minerva visible in this square is one of the best preserved Roman temple facades in the whole of Italy, yet most visitors to Assisi walk straight past it to reach the Basilica, making it one of the most overlooked Roman monuments in the country.
