Lyme Regis Beach & The Cobb - Dorset, UK
Sandy beach, the famous Cobb harbour wall, and the open waters of Lyme Bay all visible in one frame from the terrace of Swim Café on Marine Parade. The Cobb curves out into the sea on the right side of the shot, with boats moored in the harbour behind it, while the beach stretches away to the left under a wide Dorset sky.
Lyme Regis sits on the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching 95 miles along the Dorset and Devon shoreline. The cliffs around the town are one of the most productive fossil sites in Britain, regularly yielding ammonites, ichthyosaur bones, and other marine reptile remains from the Jurassic period.
The beach is busy through the summer season and quieter in winter, but the camera runs year-round and the view shifts considerably with the tides and weather rolling in off the English Channel.
Did You Know? The Cobb at Lyme Regis is over 700 years old and has been rebuilt and extended numerous times following storm damage throughout its history. It featured in Jane Austen's Persuasion and was the setting for the iconic scene in The French Lieutenant's Woman, making it one of the most filmed harbour walls in England.
