Duluth Canal & Harbor - MN, USA
This live camera from the Lake Superior Maritime Visitors' Centre sits on Canal Park Drive in Duluth, Minnesota, looking east along the Duluth Ship Canal towards the open waters of Lake Superior. The canal stretches 480 metres between the two piers visible in frame and is the primary entry point for commercial vessels into the Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin, which together form one of the furthest inland seaports in the world at 3,700 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse at the end of the south pier is the Duluth South Breakwater Inner Light, built in 1901, while the red-roofed structure at the end of the north pier is the Duluth North Pier Light, dating from 1910.
Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes by surface area, covering 82,103 square kilometres, and holds approximately 10% of the world's surface fresh water. The Port of Duluth-Superior handles around 35 million tonnes of cargo annually, primarily iron ore, coal, limestone, and grain, with bulk carriers regularly exceeding 300 metres in length passing through this canal. Some vessels arrive via the St Lawrence Seaway, a 3,700-kilometre system of locks, canals, and lakes connecting the Great Lakes to the Atlantic, making Duluth one of the few inland ports accessible to ocean-going ships.
The camera is operated by the Lake Superior Marine Museum Association in partnership with the US Army Corps of Engineers and is mounted on the roof of the Lake Superior Maritime Visitors' Centre, which sits directly beside the Aerial Lift Bridge, one of Duluth's most recognised landmarks. The bridge, just out of frame to the left, has a vertical lift span that rises 43 metres to allow tall vessels to pass and has been in operation since 1930. Canal Park itself draws over 3 million visitors per year, making it the most visited tourist area in Minnesota.
