Santos Dumont Airport - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Santos Dumont Airport sits on a narrow strip of reclaimed land jutting into Guanabara Bay in central Rio de Janeiro, with one of the most dramatic approach paths of any commercial airport in South America. Planes land and take off directly over the water, with views of Sugarloaf Mountain, the city skyline, and the bay visible from the runway on clear days.
The airport handles primarily domestic flights and is named after Alberto Santos Dumont, the Brazilian aviation pioneer who many in Brazil and France credit as the true inventor of the aeroplane, a title still fiercely contested with the Wright Brothers to this day.
Despite being one of the smaller airports serving Rio, Santos Dumont handles over 8 million passengers annually and is the preferred airport for business travellers due to its location just minutes from the city centre, in stark contrast to the international Galeão Airport which sits over 40 kilometres away.
Did You Know? Alberto Santos Dumont, after whom the airport is named, was so admired in Brazil that his face appeared on the country's currency for decades. He was also known for wearing a wristwatch at a time when men only carried pocket watches, a habit he adopted for practicality while flying, making him one of the earliest popularisers of the wristwatch.
