Jewfish Creek - Key Largo, Florida Keys, USA

At the northern tip of Key Largo, Jewfish Creek marks the point where the vast wetlands of the Florida Everglades give way to the island chain of the Florida Keys. The view from this elevated camera looks south down the creek, taking in moored boats, palm-fringed docks, and the dense mangrove forests lining both banks as far as the eye can see.

Key Largo is the first and largest island of the Florida Keys, a 125-mile coral cay archipelago stretching southwest from the tip of mainland Florida toward Cuba. The waters here feed into Florida Bay to the west and the Atlantic to the east, making this a key corridor for recreational boating and marine wildlife alike.

Manatees, dolphins and a wide variety of birdlife are regularly spotted in and around these waters, and the creek is a popular spot for fishing and kayaking.

Did You Know? Jewfish Creek takes its name from the goliath grouper, a massive fish once commonly called the jewfish. In 2001 the American Fisheries Society officially renamed it after the original name was deemed offensive. The creek kept its historic name. Goliath groupers can grow to over 300 kilograms and live for more than 37 years.
