Jewfish Creek - Key Largo, Florida Keys, USA

At the top of Key Largo, where mainland Florida gives way to the Florida Keys, Jewfish Creek winds between green mangrove islands and calm blue water, with Florida Bay opening up beyond.


Key Largo is the first and largest island in the Keys, a chain that stretches about 120 miles (190 km) toward Key West, and this is a busy little waterway, with fishing boats, sailboats and the odd jet ski passing the docks and palm trees along the shore.


Dolphins, manatees and wading birds are often seen in the warm, shallow water, and American crocodiles live around Key Largo too, though they mostly keep out of sight.


Did You Know? The creek is named after the jewfish, the old name for the goliath grouper. These giant fish can weigh over 600 pounds (270 kg).
