Hanamaki Airport East Apron - Iwate, Japan

Regional jets park on the east apron at Hanamaki Airport (花巻空港), about 4 miles (6 km) north-northeast of the city of Hanamaki, and this camera watches them load and unload under the wide skies of Iwate Prefecture.


Hanamaki is the main airport for Iwate, in Japan's northern Tohoku region. It opened in 1964 with a runway just 3,937 feet (1,200 m) long, and today, after later extensions, its runway stretches 8,202 feet (2,500 m).


Flights link Hanamaki with Sapporo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kobe and Fukuoka, and there's an international route to Taipei. It's a small, quiet regional airport, handling about 396,000 passengers in 2015, with mountains rising in the distance.
