Amami Airport - Amami Oshima, Kagoshima, Japan

This camera looks out from the observation deck at Amami Airport (奄美空港), on the subtropical island of Amami Oshima in southern Japan, over the runway and apron to the coast, as small planes and jets connect the island with the rest of the country.

The current airport opened on July 10, 1988, about 14 miles (22 km) east-northeast of Amami city, replacing an older airport 1.2 miles (2 km) to the southwest. Its single runway is 6,562 feet (2,000 m) long.

Flights link Amami with Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Naha, as well as the smaller nearby islands of Kikai, Tokunoshima, Okinoerabu and Yoron, and in 2015 it handled about 677,000 passengers.

Did You Know? In 2021, Amami Oshima became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its forests, home to rare wildlife such as the Amami rabbit.
