Northern Lights - Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

Green curtains of the aurora borealis ripple over the shores of Hudson Bay at Churchill, Manitoba, and this camera watches the sky above one of the best places on Earth to see the northern lights.

The aurora can appear here on up to 300 nights a year, and January to March bring the long, dark, cold nights that give the best views. Fewer than 1,000 people live in Churchill year-round.

The town is famous for its wildlife too. In fall, polar bears gather along the coast waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze, and in July and August more than 3,000 beluga whales fill the mouth of the Churchill River.

Did You Know? Churchill is nicknamed the Polar Bear Capital of the World, because so many bears pass through each fall on their way out onto the sea ice.
