Polar Bears - Wapusk National Park, Canada
This live camera streams from Cape Churchill in Wapusk National Park, Manitoba, one of the largest polar bear maternity denning areas in the world. The feed is operated by Explore.org in partnership with Polar Bears International and captures bears in their natural Arctic tundra habitat on the western shore of Hudson Bay.
Wapusk, meaning white bear in the Cree language, protects one of the most significant polar bear populations in the world. Pregnant females dig maternity dens in the frozen ground each autumn, giving birth to cubs over winter before emerging in spring, a cycle this camera has documented for years.
The Churchill area is one of the only places on earth where wild polar bears can be observed at close range, drawing wildlife photographers and researchers from around the world each season.
Did You Know? Polar bears are classified as marine mammals, not land mammals, because they spend most of their lives on sea ice and are strong swimmers capable of covering over 60 kilometres without rest. Their fur is not actually white but transparent, appearing white because it reflects visible light.
