Al Jazeera Arabic Live - Doha, Qatar
Al Jazeera Arabic is the original and flagship service of the Al Jazeera Media Network, broadcasting continuously in Arabic from its headquarters in Doha, Qatar. Launched in November 1996 as the Arab world's first independent 24-hour news channel, it fundamentally changed the media landscape across the Middle East and North Africa, introducing a level of editorial independence and on-the-ground reporting that had simply not existed in Arabic language television before.
The channel reaches an estimated 65 million viewers daily across the Arab world and the global Arabic speaking diaspora, making it by far the most watched Arabic language news channel on earth. Its coverage of conflicts, elections, and political upheaval across the Middle East has made it one of the most influential and at times controversial broadcasters in the world.
Al Jazeera Arabic was the primary broadcaster of major events including the Arab Spring uprisings from 2010 onwards, providing continuous live coverage that many credit with helping shape how those events unfolded across the region.
Did You Know? Al Jazeera was initially funded with a $150 million grant from the Emir of Qatar and was originally expected to become self-funding within five years. Nearly three decades later it remains state funded, though it operates with a stated editorial independence from the Qatari government.
