Wildlife View - Midway Atoll, Hawaii, USA

Thousands of Laysan albatrosses nest across the sand of Sand Island on Midway Atoll, a tiny coral atoll in the middle of the North Pacific, and this camera looks over the colony as the birds sit on their nests and tend their chicks.

About 1.5 million Laysan albatrosses breed here each winter, roughly 70 percent of the world's population. The atoll is a national wildlife refuge and part of the vast Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.

Midway lies about 1,310 miles (2,110 km) northwest of Honolulu, roughly halfway between North America and Asia. The Battle of Midway was fought nearby in June 1942, a turning point in the Pacific war.

Did You Know? About 20 tons of debris, most of it plastic, washes up on Midway every year, and nearly every albatross has some plastic in its stomach.
