Zócalo Constitution Plaza - Mexico City, Mexico (Cam 1)
This live camera looks across the Zócalo, officially known as the Plaza de la Constitución, the vast main square at the heart of Mexico City's historic centre. The Metropolitan Cathedral dominates the northern edge of the frame, one of the largest and oldest cathedrals in the Americas, begun in 1573 and still standing over the ruins of the ancient Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan.
The Zócalo is one of the largest city squares in the world, capable of holding hundreds of thousands of people during major events. It serves as the political, cultural, and symbolic heart of the entire country, with the National Palace running along its eastern edge housing the offices of the Mexican presidency and Diego Rivera's famous murals inside.
Did You Know? The giant Mexican flag flying at the centre of the Zócalo measures 14.3 by 25 metres and weighs 230 kilograms. It is raised and lowered by the military in a daily ceremony that draws crowds of onlookers every morning and evening.
