Boulevard du Midi Beach - Cannes, France
This camera looks out over the Boulevard du Midi beach on the western side of Cannes, with a stone jetty extending into the calm Mediterranean and the Estérel hills visible along the coastline to the east. The beach here is quieter than the famous Croisette on the other side of the town, and is used primarily by locals rather than tourists.
Cannes sits on the French Riviera between Nice and Saint-Tropez and is best known internationally for the Cannes Film Festival, held each May at the Palais des Festivals on the Croisette. The camera is one of three installed by the city alongside two real-time weather stations to provide live sea conditions for water users.
The Mediterranean light on this stretch of coast is particularly strong in summer, and the camera captures the full shift from morning calm to afternoon activity on the beach and water.
Did You Know? Cannes was a small fishing village of fewer than 4,000 people until 1834, when a British Lord Chancellor named Henry Brougham was forced to stop there after the border with Nice was closed due to a cholera outbreak. He liked it so much he built a villa and returned every winter, inspiring a wave of British aristocrats to follow, and effectively creating the Riviera as a winter destination for the wealthy.
