Malawi is a long, narrow, landlocked country in southeast Africa, covering about 45,750 square miles (118,484 km²). Known as the Warm Heart of Africa, it is dominated by Lake Malawi, which fills much of the Great Rift Valley along its eastern side, while green highlands, plateaus and tea estates rise to the west and south.

Its most famous natural landmark is Lake Malawi, one of the largest and deepest lakes in Africa, whose southern shores are protected in Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the south, the granite Mulanje Massif rises to Sapitwa Peak at about 9,849 feet (3,002 m), home to the rare Mulanje cedar, the national tree.

Elephants, hippos and black rhinos live along the Shire River in Liwonde National Park, and lions and leopards have been brought back to Majete Wildlife Reserve. Zebras and roan antelope graze the high grasslands of the Nyika Plateau, and the African fish eagle, the national bird, calls out over the lake.
