Paso del Norte - Ciudad Juárez, Mexico
This camera looks down Avenida Benito Juárez in the heart of downtown Ciudad Juárez, one of the main approach streets to the Paso del Norte International Bridge. Unlike the toll booth views at other crossings, this feed captures the urban street scene on the Mexican side, with traffic, pedestrians and the commercial life of the city centre all visible in the frame.
The Paso del Norte crossing connects downtown Ciudad Juárez directly to downtown El Paso, Texas, making it one of the most centrally located border crossings along the entire US-Mexico frontier. The name tells the history of the region: Paso del Norte means Pass of the North, referring to the natural gap in the Franklin Mountains where the Río Bravo flows and where Spanish explorers first crossed this terrain in the 16th century.
The camera is operated by the Fideicomiso de Puentes Fronterizos de Chihuahua and runs around the clock, capturing the rhythm of a city where the border is not an edge but a thoroughfare.
Did You Know? When Pancho Villa's forces captured Ciudad Juárez in 1911, American spectators paid to watch the battle from rooftops on the El Paso side of the border. It is considered one of the only military engagements in history to have had a paying audience.
