Breuil-Cervinia & the Matterhorn - Aosta Valley, Italy
This camera looks up the Valtournenche valley towards Breuil-Cervinia, the Italian Alpine resort that sits directly beneath the southern face of the Matterhorn. The peak is visible upper right, partially shrouded in cloud, rising to 4,478 metres above the valley floor. The village spreads across the base of the valley with ski infrastructure, hotels, and chalets filling the bowl between the surrounding ridges.
Breuil-Cervinia sits at 2,006 metres and shares a ski area with Zermatt on the Swiss side of the mountain, connected by lifts that cross the border at high altitude. The resort has one of the longest ski seasons in the Alps due to its elevation and north-facing glacier terrain.
The Matterhorn straddles the border between Italy and Switzerland, with its summit sitting precisely on the frontier. Despite being one of the most climbed peaks in the Alps, it still claims several lives each year.
Did You Know? The first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 ended in disaster. Edward Whymper's team of seven reached the summit on 14 July, but on the descent four climbers fell to their deaths when a rope broke. The tragedy made headlines across Europe and sparked a public debate about whether mountaineering was a reckless pursuit that should be discouraged.
