Bourbon Street runs through the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans, and this camera watches the people, street musicians and partygoers who wander between its bars, clubs and old iron-balconied buildings.
The street was laid out and named in 1721 by the French engineer Adrien de Pauger, who honored the House of Bourbon, the royal family of France. It was called Rue Bourbon until after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
Despite its French name, much of the Quarter looks Spanish. After the Great New Orleans Fire of 1788 destroyed about 80 percent of the city's buildings, it was rebuilt in brick and stucco with ironwork balconies.
