Galesburg Rail Hub - IL, USA
This Virtual Railfan PTZ camera is hosted by the Discovery Depot Children's Museum at milepost 162.327 on BNSF's Chicago Division, overlooking Galesburg Amtrak Station, the Galesburg Railroad Museum, and BNSF's third-largest classification yard in the United States, originally built by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in 1905. Between 80 and 100 trains pass daily, with 40-plus BNSF freights and 8 Amtrak services including the California Zephyr, Southwest Chief, Carl Sandburg, and Illinois Zephyr.
The Galesburg Railroad Museum sits directly in this camera's view, housing Burlington Route steam locomotive No. 3006 alongside a caboose and baggage car on static display. Galesburg sits at the convergence of the Ottumwa, Mendota, and Brookfield Subdivisions, 45 miles north-west of Peoria, making it one of the most significant rail junctions in Illinois outside of Chicago.
Galesburg is the birthplace of poet Carl Sandburg, born here in 1878, after whom one of the Amtrak services visible on this feed is named. Knox College in Galesburg hosted the fifth of the seven Lincoln-Douglas debates in October 1858, one of the most significant public political exchanges in American history.
Did You Know? The Amtrak Carl Sandburg service visible on this feed is named after Galesburg's most famous native, the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet born here in 1878 who wrote the definitive biography of Abraham Lincoln.
