Djúpivogur Harbour - East Iceland
This camera looks across the small harbour of Djúpivogur on Iceland's east coast, with fishing boats moored in calm water and the sharp peak of Búlandstindur rising behind the village to dominate the skyline. The mountain's near-perfect pyramidal profile, snow-covered for much of the year, makes it one of the most distinctive summits in the Eastfjords region and a constant backdrop to life in the village below.
Djúpivogur is one of Iceland's oldest trading posts, with records of commercial activity here dating back to the sixteenth century. The village sits at the tip of the Búlandsnes peninsula where it meets Berufjörður, and the surrounding waters are rich fishing grounds that have sustained the community for centuries. The population today is around 400 people, making it one of the quieter inhabited points along Iceland's Ring Road.
The harbour wall, traditional red and black timber buildings, and a colourful mural visible on the left side of the frame give the camera a character that shifts noticeably with the seasons, from ice and snow in the deep winter months through to the extended golden light of the Arctic summer when the sun barely sets.
Did You Know? Djúpivogur is home to an outdoor art installation called Eggin í Gleðivík, meaning The Eggs of Merry Bay, created by Icelandic artist Sigurður Guðmundsson. Thirty-four large polished stone eggs are arranged along the shoreline, each representing a different seabird species that breeds in the area. The installation has become one of the more quietly celebrated pieces of public art in Iceland.
