Tarpon Dock - Robbie's Marina, Islamorada, USA
Dozens of giant tarpon circle just below the dock at Robbie's Marina in Islamorada, waiting for visitors to drop the next handful of baitfish over the edge. Some of these fish weigh over 100 pounds, and watching them surge to the surface to feed is one of the most memorable things you can do in the Florida Keys.
The marina is a lively place, with an outdoor restaurant, market and boat rentals all visible in the frame alongside the crowds that come throughout the day. The "DO NOT FEED THE PELICANS" sign at the dock edge is a hint that the local birdlife has worked out exactly what is going on here.
Islamorada sits roughly halfway along the Florida Keys chain and is a hub for sportfishing, water sports and the kind of relaxed waterfront atmosphere this feed captures well.
Did You Know? Tarpon are one of the few large fish capable of breathing air directly, using a modified swim bladder that functions similarly to a lung. This allows them to gulp oxygen at the surface in oxygen-depleted water where most other fish would suffocate, which is part of why they have survived essentially unchanged for over 100 million years.
