Pashupatinath Temple - Kathmandu, Nepal
This live camera looks across the Pashupatinath Temple complex on the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, one of the most sacred Hindu temples in the world and the holiest Shiva shrine in Nepal. The gilded pagoda roof visible at the centre of frame is the main temple structure, a two-tiered building with a gold-plated roof and silver-plated doors that dates in its current form to the 17th century, though the site has been a place of worship for over 1,500 years.
The smoke visible rising from the left bank of the Bagmati comes from the Arya Ghat cremation ghats, where open-air Hindu cremations take place daily as part of a tradition that has continued uninterrupted for centuries.
Pashupatinath was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 as part of the Kathmandu Valley listing, which covers seven monument zones across the valley. Non-Hindu visitors are not permitted inside the main temple but can observe the complex from the eastern bank of the Bagmati, making this live camera one of the few ways to see inside the inner courtyard. The temple draws over one million pilgrims annually, with the Maha Shivaratri festival bringing up to 700,000 devotees in a single day.
The Bagmati River running behind the temple complex is considered sacred in both Hinduism and Buddhism and flows 195 kilometres south into the Ganges system in India. Kathmandu sits at 1,400 metres above sea level in a valley surrounded by the Himalayan foothills, visible as the mountain ridgeline in the background of this feed.
Did You Know? Non-Hindu visitors are banned from entering Pashupatinath Temple's inner sanctum, making this live camera one of the only ways people outside the faith can see directly into one of Hinduism's most sacred courtyards.
