A second camera near Kensington-Allegheny station looks along the sidewalk and stairways beneath the El, at the heart of a North Philadelphia neighborhood that has become a symbol of America's opioid crisis.

Drug dealing took hold in Kensington in the 1970s, helped by empty factory buildings and easy access by train and highway. As the area declined, heroin, fentanyl and crack spread, and by 2020 the streets around K&A held a market worth around a billion dollars a year.

News reports often describe it as the largest open-air drug market on the East Coast. In 2024, Mayor Cherelle Parker moved city policy away from harm reduction and toward stricter enforcement.

Did You Know? The neighborhood was founded in the 1730s by Anthony Palmer and grew into one of the busiest textile manufacturing districts in the United States.
