Narita Intl. Airport - Narita, Chiba, Japan

From the south side of Runway A at Narita International Airport (成田空港), this camera watches wide-body jets from around the world take off and land, about 37 miles (60 km) east of central Tokyo in Chiba Prefecture.

Runway A was the airport's first, and at 13,123 feet (4,000 m) it's one of the longest in Japan. Narita was long Japan's busiest airport for international passengers and cargo, and it handled about 42.3 million passengers in 2025.

Building it caused one of Japan's longest protests. Local farmers and activists fought the project for years in what became known as the Sanrizuka Struggle, and the opposition went on for decades after it opened.

Did You Know? Narita was due to open in March 1978, but protesters broke into the control tower and wrecked equipment, so the opening was pushed back to May 20.
