Port Lincoln Osprey Nest - South Australia
This live camera watches over an active Osprey nest built on a barge at the entrance to Lincoln Cove Marina in Port Lincoln, on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia. The nest has been occupied since before Friends of Osprey purchased the barge in 2015, and the organisation has since relocated it to a higher, more stable platform fitted with a solar powered security camera to enable 24/7 monitoring.
Friends of Osprey is a South Australian conservation group dedicated to protecting and growing the state's Osprey population. Unlike many raptor species, the Port Lincoln Ospreys do not migrate, remaining at the nest year round and relying on the extraordinarily fish-rich waters of Spencer Gulf and Boston Bay below them.
The nest itself measures 1.25 by 1.5 metres and has been the site of some dramatic wildlife moments over the years, including repeated cases of siblicide, where the stronger chick kills a weaker sibling, a behaviour documented in Ospreys globally despite abundant food being delivered by the parents.
Did You Know? Ospreys have a reversible outer toe that allows them to grasp fish with two toes on each side, a unique adaptation among raptors that makes them one of the most efficient aerial fishing birds on earth, with a success rate of around 70% per dive.
