Copacabana Beach - Posto 6, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Stretching 4.5 kilometres along the Atlantic coast of Brazil's most famous city, Copacabana is one of the most recognisable beaches on earth. This live camera is positioned at Posto 6, the southernmost lifeguard post on the beach, offering a sweeping panoramic view of the full curve of the bay with the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain visible in the background.
Copacabana sits in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro and draws an estimated 2 million visitors on New Year's Eve alone, when its famous fireworks display over the water attracts one of the largest outdoor gatherings anywhere in the world. On regular days the beach is a living snapshot of Rio culture, with vendors, volleyball games, joggers, and swimmers filling the promenade and shoreline from early morning.
The camera sits close to the historic Copacabana Fort, a military installation dating back to 1914 that still operates today and houses a small army museum open to the public.
Did You Know? Copacabana's famous black and white wave pattern promenade was designed by legendary Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx in 1970, and the design has since been replicated on pavements in cities across Brazil as a symbol of Rio's cultural identity.
