Skid Row - Los Angeles, California, USA (Cam 1)

This street-level camera looks along a sidewalk on Skid Row, in downtown Los Angeles, California, where tents and makeshift shelters line the street and people go about their day in one of America's best-known neighborhoods.

Skid Row covers about 50 blocks east of downtown, officially called Central City East. It has had a large homeless population since at least the 1930s, and a 2020 count found more than 4,400 people living here.

The area grew up around the railroads, with cheap hotels for seasonal workers. Many of those buildings were later torn down, and today shelters and missions such as the Union Rescue Mission and the Midnight Mission work here.

Did You Know? The name comes from logging towns, where logs were slid down greased "skid roads," and out-of-work loggers gathered at the bottom.
